How Much Does a Nikah Cost in the US?
Published October 20, 2026

A nikah can be very simple or a large celebration, so the honest answer is that it depends on the choices you make. This guide separates the costs you cannot avoid, such as the marriage license, from the ones that are optional. It also explains how to raise the subject of an imam's arrangements without us putting a number on it.
The one cost almost every couple has: the marriage license
If you want your nikah to be recognized by the state, you need a civil marriage license, and the fee is set by the state or county. It varies a lot. On the official clerk or county pages we read in October 2026, the license fee ranged from $35 to $169 across six offices.
Only one of those pages (Tarrant County, last modified September 29, 2026) showed a date, so treat the numbers as a guide to the range and confirm the current fee with your county clerk before you go. Fees can change, and some offices add charges. Tarrant County, for example, lists a 1.73% fee for paying by credit card and a $100 out-of-state applicant fee when neither applicant can prove Texas residency.
- New York City: $35 (NYC 311 marriage license page).
- Cook County, Illinois: $60 (Cook County Clerk marriage license page).
- Tarrant County, Texas: $76 (Tarrant County Clerk).
- Travis County, Texas: $80 (Travis County Clerk).
- Los Angeles County, California: $91 for a public license, $85 for a confidential license (LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk fees page).
- King County, Washington: $169 (King County Recorder's Office).
Premarital course discounts
A few states reward couples who complete an approved premarital education course. The Texas State Law Library says Texas couples who complete an approved course of at least eight hours, during the year before they apply, may save up to $60 on the license fee, and can have the 72-hour waiting period waived by showing proof of completion.
In practice that means a big drop. Travis County lists $80 reduced to $20, and Tarrant County lists $76 reduced to $16 when you present a Twogether in Texas certificate. Florida has a similar rule in its statutes: the license fee is reduced by $32.50 with a certificate from a premarital course of at least four hours (Florida Statutes section 741.0305, 2024 edition).
Course providers charge their own fees, which are not set by the state. Check that the provider is on the state's approved list before paying.
Mosque facility and nikah fees
Some mosques publish a fee for using their space or processing a request, and many do not. We only mention a fee where the mosque states it on its own official page.
As one example, the Valley Ranch Islamic Center (VRIC) in Irving, Texas, states on its marriage page that it charges a $50 non-refundable processing fee with the application, then a facility fee of $350 for members or $450 for non-members to reserve the date. The page also says a $500 cleaning fee may apply if the space is not restored afterwards. The page has no date on its marriage information (its footer shows 2026), so confirm with VRIC directly.
Do not assume another mosque charges the same. Policies differ by community, so ask the mosque office before you plan around a number.
Optional extras
Everything beyond the license is your choice. Families who keep it small might only need a quiet room, two witnesses and a license. Others add one or more of these, and prices depend heavily on your city and vendors.
A good approach is to decide what matters most to your families first, then spend only there.
- Venue rental, if you are not using a mosque hall or a home.
- Decor and flowers.
- A photographer or videographer.
- Food, drinks and dessert for guests.
- Attire, henna and hair or makeup.
- A premarital course fee, if you take one.
- Certified copies of your marriage certificate after the wedding.
Asking your imam about arrangements
ImamConnect is a free matching service. Imams set their own arrangements, we do not set or publish any imam's fee, and practices vary, so there is no standard figure we can give you.
The kindest approach is to ask politely beforehand. You might write, Is there anything we should know or prepare regarding travel or other arrangements? That lets the imam answer in their own way and avoids awkwardness on the day. If your budget is tight, you can say so gently.
A simple way to plan your budget
List the fixed items first: the license fee and any certified copies. Then add any mosque fee that its page states. After that, ask your imam about their arrangements and set aside an amount you are comfortable with, and only then look at optional extras.
Remember that mahr is separate from all of this. In Islamic teaching it is understood as a right of the bride and is agreed between the couple, so it should not be mixed into the wedding budget.
